Irregularly-shaped property lines and setbacks of this Northampton residence creates the opportunity for a strolling garden that also provides important edges to newly created interior rooms: library, kitchen and screened porch. Mature plants already on the site are incorporated into the design of garden “rooms,” visible from the inside, but screened from adjacent roads. By subtly pressing the “floors” of these garden spaces into the earth, unique stone edging is made possible, contributing, along with the plantings, to the clear spatial form of the garden. The clients’ passion for growing perennials and water plants is enhanced by the new garden edges of earth, stone, plants and water.
